It’s WWW Wednesday, a tag hosted on Taking on a World of Words It’s easy to do, just answer the three questions below!
What are you currently reading?
I’m in the middle of too many things this week.
I’m still reading Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman (I found an ARC of this at a library booksale) before bed and on the train, but being a physical read it’s much more slow going than my audiobooks. I was enjoying it until I had one of those “Gah! That’s a dumb decision!” moments in this drought-based dystopian/thriller.
As for my audiobooks:
I’m buddy-listening to City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett, after reading his most recent book at the beginning of the month and loving it. I’m not IN LOVE with this one yet, but after a slower start it’s definitely holding my attention more now. While Foundryside reminded me of Sanderson books, this one is reminding me of China Mieville.
Then I had started The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden Monday morning, got about 10 percent in before my hold on An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green came in from the library, so I’m currently really enjoying that instead.
What did you recently finish reading?
Fight and Flight (★★★☆☆): I did a whole series review on this and the next book in this series. It’s still a fun book, but this one was seriously lacking in the plot/story development department. (Audio via Audible)
The Kiss of Deception (★★★★☆): I enjoyed this more than I was honestly expecting. The last few YA fantasy romances I had tried were disappointing, so I went into this not expecting much. But I found the intrigue of the first part of this book really fun (especially after finding out I couldn’t game the system to figure out who was who while on audio). It did start to drag a bit after the reveal, but the end won me back. (Audio via Libby)
Lady Killer (★★★☆☆): I love the art style of this graphic novel, but this first volume felt like it was just scratching the surface of the characters and story. (Paperback via library)
Out of Spite, Out of Mind (★★★★☆): See series review. This one had a time paradox mayhem plot that you’ll either love or absolutely hate. And the logic of the ending irked me. I’m worried this series is going to be dragged out too long. (Audio via Audible)
Sing, Unburied, Sing (★★★★☆): This book was so incredibly lyrical in its prose and the way it examined this family’s past and how history has a way of worming its way back into the present with the magical realism elements. But saying that, I feel like at points I wanted the characters to push the story forward themselves rather than having the ghosts do the heavy lifting. A difficult read but one worth checking out if you haven’t already. (Audio via Libby)
I DNFed (did not finish) The Association of Small Bombs by Karan Mahajan after listening to 14%. The narrator was reminding me too much of this other super-dry narrator who always puts me to sleep, so I thought it best to not waste my time. I haven’t decided whether I’m giving up all together or just on audio.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m participating in #ReadWhatYouOwn September / an early OWNtober by prioritizing books I already own, so right now I have these books on hold, ready to go whenever I finish my current reads:
Sabriel by Garth Nix, Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, The Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch, and Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.
Plus I’m waiting on Lethal White to get off hold on audio / I might continue on with any of the series I’m just starting, be it the Ann Leckie series or Robert Jackson Bennett series.
Bonus Round
What have I borrowed?
In addition to two I already mentioned, I also checked out The Shadow of What Was Lost and The Book of M. Who knows if I’ll get to them in time.
What have I acquired?
I found a copy of The Mars Room, which just made the short list for the Man Booker, in a Little Free Library.
A lot of the books in this post are on my tbr, I can’t wait to get to them! Enjoy!😊

So jealous you found an ARC of Dry at the library sale! I requested on Edelweiss and NetGalley, but never received responses from either. https://teripolen.com/2018/09/26/www-wednesday-what-am-i-reading-amreading-15/

I know I was so surprised! It looks like it wasn’t even read before they donated it too, because several of the pages were stuck together from the printing.

Good choice on not finishing “The Association of Small Bombs.” I only finished that book because I almost always force myself through books even when I don’t like them and because it was a book club read. It was terrible – all the way through. I felt it from the very beginning too. I’m glad I’m not alone. I own “The Mars Room” and should probably read that as well. Thanks for visiting my post!

Ugh, I hate it when super dumb moments happen in otherwise good books…. and now I kind of want to know what it is. Can you say, or is it too spoilery?
Also, yay bonus round! 😀 My WWW post is here: https://rlprotagonist.wordpress.com/2018/09/26/wwwweds-patriarchal-anxiety/

Um, I don’t think it’s too spoilery. Basically the characters focus on getting a very specific truck to get out of town rather than just hot wiring any suitable truck, so they put themselves at more risk/waste time by going the opposite direction they need to go to hunt down this truck. (Out of context that probably doesn’t sound that bad, but boy was I yelling at these kids for being dumb)
