We’d all like to believe that we expect to love every book we pick up, but that’s just not the case. On this fall Friday I’m bringing to you my 5-star predictions. If you haven’t seen this going around, it was started by Mercedes of MercysBookishMusings on Booktube. She took a look at her shelves and the books on her TBR and guessed which books would get 5-stars once she read them. So I’m doing the same, and I’ll hopefully do a follow up post to see how accurate my predictions were.
The Seven (1/2) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
I have been hyped for this book for months and it’s finally out in North America. From how I’ve heard it described, it’s a sci-fi/magical realism murder mystery story in which the main character is trying to figure out who killed Evelyn Hardcastle and he/she relives the night of the ball through the bodies of several of the partygoers. This sounds so twisty turny with a moody setting, which is right up my alley, and I’ve heard nearly all rave reviews.
We Are Legion (We Are Bob)
This is a comic science fiction story in which a guy signs up to have his consciousness uploaded for later use, and he wakes up a century later as the AI of a spaceship. Like what? And because he’s an AI, he can split his consciousness to be in multiple ships (hence the legion). The Sword and Laser podcast raved about this book/series and I just know the audio is going to be a riot. I need more funny sci-fi in my life.
Rebecca
This book has been making the rounds in the circle of Booktubers/reviewers I follow and I think it’s finally time for me to pick up this gothic modern classic. I don’t know much about the plot of this book, but I don’t really need to. My one worry is I haven’t read very many classics recently so I don’t know if my tastes have changed, but this sounds like something I will love.
Transitioning into books that aren’t out yet.
A Very Large Expanse of Sea
I don’t read many contemporary books any more, except when they deal with difficult and timely topics. Tahereh Mafi’s book about the time after 9/11 as a muslim girl is bound to be just the kind of hard-hitting contemporary I love.
Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow
I fell head over heels for Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow when I read it earlier this year and I seriously can’t wait for the sequel. I have extremely high hopes that this doesn’t have “second book” syndrome or that it doesn’t become too juvenile since it is a middle grade series. I also hope Jessica Townsend has a set idea of where this series is going rather than eventually turning it into a procedural “This Week On-“ type series like too many other mediocre middle-grade books. So, if the book successfully avoids all of that, it is bound to be a magical and charming tale.
