What are you currently reading?

I’m in a bit of a slump with the end of the year and with my time off work, so I’m very near the beginning of both of these.

I’m buddy reading The Mists of Avalon, a female-focused King Arthur retelling by Marion Zimmer Bradley. So far it’s really slow, plus I think I’d be enjoying it more if I was more familiar with the Arthurian legend. It’s a 51 hour audiobook, so get used to seeing me mention this book.

I’m also reading The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, which is on my 5-star prediction list, but it’s too early to tell if I’ll love it. It’s a Groundhog-Day-esque murder mystery that I’ve heard rave reviews about.

I skipped WWW last week, so here’s two weeks worth of wrapping up

• Severance by Ling Ma (★★★★★), a post-apocalyptic satire that really stuck with me (Full review here)
• We Are Legion, We Are Bob by Dennis E. Taylor (★★★★☆), a hysterical sci-fi with a self-replicating AI with split personalities. It was a 5-star prediction but didn’t quite make it there (perhaps because of the length).
• For We Are Many (★★★★☆), the second book in the Bobiverse series. I enjoyed this one more than the first because the plot was more streamlined and it benefited from your familiarity with the cast of characters
• All These Worlds (★★★★☆), the third/final book in the Bobiverse series that was just as fun as the first two, a bit more emotional, but wrapped up a bit too quickly.
• Red Clocks by Leni Zumas (★★★★☆), a feminist dystopian that was incredibly powerful in its message but had a bit of a slow start because of its unique structure (Full review here)
• Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend (★★★★★ish), the sequel to Nevermoor that I’ve been eagerly waiting for all year. I’m going back and forth on my rating as I really really enjoyed the second half of the book, but the middle didn’t shine as much for me. It’s a 5-star prediction, so when I wrap those books up I’ll settle on a rating.
• How Long ’til Black Future Month? by NK Jemison (★★★★☆), a speculative fiction short story collection that explored some really interesting topics and created some great worlds. DO NOT recommend the audio.
• Redshirts by John Scalzi (★★★★☆), a tongue-in-cheek play on Star Trek/other sci-fi show tropes that was really fun
• The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan (★★★★★), a YA contemporary/magical realism that offers a powerful look at grief and how mental illness can affect families (trigger warnings for depression/suicide)

What do you think you’ll read next?

I have Bad Blood, the nonfiction book about the Theranos scandal, and The Secret History out from my library now, so I’ll likely turn to one of those next.
