📚Hello 9-1-1? I’m surrounded by unread books and I don’t know what to do 📚 . Happy Friday, book friends! So I’m moving apartments in a couple months, so every time I walk by my shelves recently I get a flash of what it will be like packing up all of these unread books 😱 There is quite a lot of them. SO. My focus for the foreseeable future is getting through only books on my shelves and not just whatever I see available on Libby 🤷🏻‍♀️ . I’m hoping to at least get through enough books to get rid of the double stacking that’s happening right now, whether that’s through reading them or unhauling ones I only picked up on a whim. Wish me luck! 🍀 . Do you have any springtime reading goals?

Happy Independent Bookstore Day, everybody! I made it out to two of my local indies today and made it out with a couple goodies, one for myself (from @solidstatedc) and one for a Mother’s Day gift (from @politicsprose at Union Market) 🎁 . . In other bookish news: I was a bit MIA this week because of brain fogginess/busy at work, but that didn’t stop me from reading! One of the highlights of my week was My Lovely Wife, which is a twisty domestic thriller that absolutely sated my craving for serial killer content. I tread carefully in this genre because I find most of the stories too predictable, but this one managed to keep me hooked, keep me speculating. I did guess the twists but they were done with enough finesse that it wasn’t disappointing. I do wish it circumvented the “wife of..” “daughter of blank” trope a bit more than it did (maybe by hearing from the wife’s perspective for a chapter or two instead of just the husband’s) but I’m all for the gender parity in villainy. . Did you make it out to any local bookstores today?

So, Bookstagram: I think I’ve discovered a jinx. 🔮 Bare with me: I’m a cynic who doesn’t really believe in things like that, so it’s more of a self-defeating prophecy. But here’s my theory: It seems like as soon as I stage a photo of a book I haven’t started reading yet, I’m doomed to not crack it open. Case in point: The Casual Vacancy. . I took this photo on Friday, intending to post on Friday, to talk about using it for the Tome Topple readathon challenge of “tome that’s been on my TBR the longest.” Folks, it’s Monday. Not only did I not post this when I intended, but I have yet to start reading it either. For no real reason — just jinxed. . Anyone else notice a pattern in their reading? Like as soon as you plan your month’s TBR you are no longer interested in those books? Let’s dissect the causes 🔬

Good evening, folks 🌆 Work was absolutely crazy today, but I survived! I feel like treat myself so I’m off to the bookstore 📚 . But I’m really eager to get back home for my current read: The Light Brigade by @kameronhurley 🌠 It’s a military sci-fi thriller that I’m absolutely devouring. Check out @basiclandcave for her great review that made me push this up on my TBR. I’m listening on audio (obviously) and its narrated by the actress who play Drummer in The Expanse so I’m having an easy time picturing her as Dietz, as she deals with her time-bending confusion and badassery. . What are you currently reading? Or better: what was the last book you treated yourself with?

Hooray 🏆 // Alternatively: Good Riddance! . I’ve finally done it, everyone. I finally finished reading The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Here’s what it took, by the numbers: Months: 14 Pages: 12,000+ Time Spent Listening: 19+ DAYS (461 hours to be exact) Hair pulling, sighs, rage pausing: Countless . I haven’t been shy about saying I did not enjoy this classic epic fantasy series, but I was determined to see it through to the end. I knew I was in the minority of fantasy readers (it tops most gatekeepers’ lists of best fantasy of all time), I wanted to trust Brandon Sanderson could fix some of the issues I had in his finishing off of the last three books, etc. But to say there were highs and lows in my reading experience would be too generous — more like a few coasting plateaus and a lot of crashing lows. . I’ve had far too many unpleasant arguments with Jordan Stans to go into any more detail than that (DM me if you want specifics, because you might still want to try the series yourself). I’m simply here to say what most generous readers will tell you: Ignore the gatekeepers. You don’t have to read this series to be a true “Fantasy fan.” It’s OK to not like certain authors and certain books. If you like fantasy, you’re a fantasy fan. You’re under no other obligation than that. . Simply put: Don’t let the Stans get you down. . . . (For readathon updates, continued in the comments)

Good evening, lovely bookish people 📚 I hope everyone had an easy start to your weeks. Here’s what I’m brightening my day with: Sissy by @jacobtobia. They have broken the unnecessary mold of “trans narratives” with this memoir. This book so far has had equal parts nuanced conversations about gender and hilarious banter with the reader (don’t knock their grandma’s style!) It truly is a reclamation – of the word sissy and of their own story. • What book are you starting your week off with?
